Laszlo Regos

One of the most memorable times of my childhood was watching my father create magic in the makeshift photo lab in our small Budapest apartment. As an avid amateur photographer he would mix his own chemicals and develop his films and prints while I would dream of the day I too could become a photographer. Motivated by this experience I studied chemistry at the Technical University of Budapest and soon after I received my M.S in photochemistry, I started to work for one of the largest photo-manufacturing company in Eastern Europe: Forte Photochemical Industries. I became the manager of their photo processing lab, but I always had my eye on the other ball; to be a professional photographer.

Seeking political and artistic freedom, I have emigrated to the U.S in 1979 and after a few years working in a professional photo lab, I opened my studio specializing in architectural photography.

Beside my commercial work as a labor of love I am photographing the architecturally and historically significant Synagogues in both in Europe and the United States. My adventure started with a book of the word famous Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary I have created for the 150th anniversary of the building. I have learned about its smaller “sister” the Central Synagogue in New York City and after photographing it it became an obsession to find other synagogues to photograph during my frequent commercial assignments around the country.

My work has been published in countless publications and my prints are decorating the walls of several synagogues, institutions and private collectors.

Although this website is dedicated to my synagogue related related photography work I am planning to invite other Jewish artists in the future to present their work on this website.
